Core features
Profile & cosmetics
Your profile page tracks everything you've learned and lets you personalise how you appear to other students. Cosmetics (avatars, card skins, rank labels) are all earned through practice, not purchased separately.
Your profile page (/me)
Every signed-in user has a private profile page at /me. For students and individual learners it is the full learner profile: progress, cosmetics, achievements and session history in one place.
Teachers and Heads of Department see a lean account page instead. It carries the identity header, the HoD handover tool, notification settings and the data controls, and none of the learner sections described below, because staff accounts do not practise cards.
Subject switcher
If you practise more than one subject your stats are tracked independently per subject. Switch subject using the subject switcher in the site header, not on the profile page itself: the profile then reloads for the subject you picked. XP, streak, and mastery charts all reflect the selected subject, and there is no combined cross-subject XP total. Your rank is the exception: it is driven by your XP across every subject you practise combined, not just the one you are viewing.
My subjects
Individual accounts curate which subjects appear in the header subject switcher from a My subjects panel on /me: toggle a Key Stage (GCSE or KS3), then tick exactly the subjects you study. Only the ticked subjects show in the switcher, alongside a “Manage subjects” link back to the panel, so you scroll through what's yours, not the whole catalogue. The subject you're currently in is always kept. Every ticked GCSE subject also gets an Exam board select in the same row: an individual account starts on Eduqas wherever the subject offers it (Psychology, which has no Eduqas specification, starts on all boards), and you change the board one subject at a time, so History can be AQA while Geography is OCR. It saves as soon as you pick and takes effect from your next session; All boards removes the filter for that subject, and KS3 subjects have no board at all. For GCSE Science, a separate Science route picker on the same page sets Combined, a single separate science, or Triple.
This week's stats
A snapshot of your activity since Monday: sessions completed, XP earned, cards reviewed, and accuracy percentage. Useful for a quick gut-check on whether your revision volume is where it should be in the run-up to exams.
Mastery chart
A stacked bar that breaks down every card in your subject into five mastery levels:
- Unseen
- You have never been shown this card.
- Seen
- You have reviewed it at least once.
- Familiar
- You've answered it correctly at least twice.
- Proficient
- Three or more correct reviews and a review interval of at least 7 days. The card is starting to stick.
- Mastered
- Four or more correct reviews and a review interval of at least 14 days. You reliably recall this fact without prompting.
The goal is to push as many cards as possible into Proficient and Mastered before your exam. The spaced-repetition algorithm schedules cards to reappear just before you're likely to forget them, so consistent daily practice is far more effective than last-minute cramming.
Topic mastery
The By topic tab breaks the same five levels down topic by topic. This makes it easy to identify which areas of the specification still have a lot of Unseen or Seen cards, the ones to prioritise next in your practice sessions.
Stats tabs: This week, 30 days, By topic, Sessions
Analytical content lives in four tabs so it doesn't crowd the page. This week shows days active out of seven, sessions, XP and accuracy for the last 7 days, plus an accuracy trend chart. 30 days is a calendar grid where each square is a day and brighter means more XP. By topic is the per-topic mastery breakdown above. Sessions lists your recent completed sessions with date, mode, card count and accuracy (Study sessions show a dash for accuracy, because nothing is marked right or wrong).
Cosmetics section
Avatars and card skins are always visible on the profile page. Locked tiers are shown as teasers so you can see what you're working towards. Scroll down to reach them; they are never hidden behind a tab.
Rank system
Every subject has six rank names, but the rank itself is driven by the XP you've earned across your whole account, not just this subject. Ranks upgrade automatically the moment you cross the next threshold. There is no ceremony required. Your rank label appears in your public profile, next to your name on leaderboards, and on the session done screen when you level up.
| XP | Food | History | Geography | Science | RS | D&T | Business | Drama | PE Theory | CS | Sociology | Psychology | Music |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Apprentice | Apprentice Scholar | Trainee Explorer | Science Student | Novice | Apprentice | Apprentice | Stage Crew | Rookie | Apprentice | Student | Student | Beginner |
| 500 | Junior Cook | Scholar | Explorer | Lab Technician | Junior Theologian | Junior Maker | Junior Manager | Understudy | Club Athlete | Junior Coder | Field Observer | Trainee | Chorister |
| 1,500 | Cook | Historian | Geographer | Researcher | Theologian | Maker | Entrepreneur | Performer | County Athlete | Coder | Researcher | Researcher | Musician |
| 4,000 | Sous Chef | Analyst | Field Researcher | Senior Researcher | Senior Theologian | Senior Designer | Senior Manager | Featured Actor | Regional Athlete | Senior Engineer | Analyst | Clinician | Soloist |
| 10,000 | Head Chef | Senior Historian | Senior Geographer | Lead Scientist | Head Theologian | Head Designer | Director | Lead Actor | National Athlete | Lead Engineer | Lead Sociologist | Lead Psychologist | Virtuoso |
| 25,000 | Master Chef | Master Historian | Master Geographer | Master Scientist | Master Theologian | Master Designer | CEO | Master Performer | Elite Athlete | Principal Engineer | Master Sociologist | Master Psychologist | Maestro |
Average pace: a student doing two 15-card sessions per day at 75% accuracy earns roughly 2,000 XP per week. At that rate you'd reach Cook (1,500 XP) in under a week and Head Chef (10,000 XP) in about five weeks. A power user putting in an hour a day can hit Master Chef in two to three weeks.
Avatars
Each subject has its own character set. You earn avatar slots as your XP grows. The picker on your profile page shows every avatar in the set, with locked ones greyed out so you can see what's coming. There is no way to pay to skip ahead: every avatar is earned through practice.
Character sets by subject
- Food (GCSE & KS3)
- Chef emoji with full skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations in total. Unlocked progressively from 0 XP (default chef) up through the full set.
- History (GCSE & KS3)
- Scholar emoji with the same skin-tone and gender matrix as Food. The same twelve combinations, scholar-themed.
- Geography (GCSE & KS3)
- Climber emoji (🧗) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations, same pattern as chef and scholar.
- Combined Science (GCSE & KS3)
- Scientist emoji (🧑🔬) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Religious Studies (GCSE & KS3)
- Judge emoji (🧑⚖️) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations. The scales-of-justice framing reflects the RS focus on moral and ethical reasoning.
- Design & Technology (GCSE & KS3)
- Factory worker emoji (🧑🏭) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Business Studies (GCSE & KS3)
- Office worker emoji (🧑💼) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Drama (GCSE & KS3)
- Singer emoji (🧑🎤) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations. Drama and Music share the same singer set; the rank labels and the card framing are what differ.
- PE Theory (GCSE & KS3)
- Runner emoji (🏃) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Computer Science (GCSE & KS3)
- Technologist emoji (🧑💻) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Sociology (GCSE & KS3)
- Teacher emoji (🧑🏫) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Psychology (GCSE & KS3)
- Health-worker emoji (🧑⚕️) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations.
- Music (GCSE & KS3)
- Singer emoji (🧑🎤) with skin-tone and gender variants, twelve combinations. Music ranks run Beginner, Chorister, Musician, Soloist, Virtuoso, Maestro.
KS3 subjects share the character set of their GCSE counterpart. Food KS3 uses the chef set, History KS3 uses the scholar set, and so on.
Avatar unlock thresholds
Avatars unlock at nine XP milestones: 0, 100, 300, 750, 1,500, 3,500, 7,500, 15,000, and 30,000 XP. Each unlocked slot reveals both a new icon and a short flavour line (for example, "750 XP: You've baked bread that holds together" for Food). The flavour text is subject-specific. A History student at the same threshold sees a historian-themed line instead.
Tip: your selected avatar appears on the class leaderboard, the school leaderboard, and the global/league leaderboards for individual accounts. Picking an avatar you like is worth doing early. It's how other students recognise you on the boards.
Card skins
Card skins change the visual theme of your trading card, the collectible summary card that represents your progress in a subject. They do not affect the appearance of the practice question and answer layout.
Like avatars, skins are unlocked by XP thresholds and stay visible as teasers before you've reached them. Select your active skin from the cosmetics section of your profile page.
Cosmetics are XP-earned on every account. Pro doesn't unlock or shortcut them. Avatars, card skins, the character rank system and the trading card all unlock by XP on the free tier. Pro (£50/yr or £6/mo) is about unlimited daily sessions, keeping your streak freezes after the trial, position framing on the global leaderboard, and early access to new subjects. See the pricing page for details.
Achievements & badge tiers
Achievements are badges worked out from what you have actually done: sessions finished, cards answered correctly, streak days held, freezes banked, topics practised, homework completed, events finished. Nothing is bought and nothing is awarded by a teacher. They appear in a grid on /me and again on your public trading card. Once earned, a badge is yours for good.
The three tiers
Most badges have three tiers rather than being three separate badges, so the grid stays readable as you progress:
- Bronze
- Started. The first threshold, usually reachable in your first session or two.
- Silver
- Committed. A few weeks of steady practice.
- Gold
- Maxed out. The top threshold for that badge.
A few badges are single-threshold and have no tiers, such as First steps for finishing your first session. Your earned tier shows as a small medal in the corner of the badge tile.
What is on offer
There are eighteen general badges plus one “expert” badge for each GCSE subject (bronze at 100 cards correct in that subject, silver at 500, gold at 1,000). A sample of the general set:
- Card collector
- Cards answered correctly across all your subjects: 50 / 250 / 1,000.
- Session grinder
- Sessions completed: 3 / 25 / 200. Centurion carries the same metric on to 100 / 500 / 1,000.
- Streak keeper
- Daily streak held for 7 / 14 / 60 days. Streak legend runs 30 / 100 / 365.
- Cold storage
- Streak freezes in reserve: 1 / 3 / 5.
- Topic explorer
- Different topics practised in your subject: 2 / 4 / 8. Topic master needs every card in a topic mastered: 1 / 5 / 10 topics.
- Perfectionist
- 100% on a standard session: 1 / 3 / 10. Accuracy ace continues at 5 / 20 / 50.
- Speed demon & Marathon mind
- Speed Rounds completed (1 / 5 / 25) and 50-card Marathons completed (1 / 3 / 10, then Marathon legend at 25 / 50 / 100).
- Homeworker
- Homework assignments completed: 1 / 5 / 15. School accounts only.
- Polyglot
- Subjects practised: 2 / 3 / 4. A breadth badge, so a student practising one subject will not see it.
Locked badges stay in the grid, greyed out with a dashed border, and each shows how far you are from the next tier. The count at the top of the section is how many you have earned out of the badges available to your account. Individual accounts never see Homeworker, because homework is school-only. Free individual accounts also do not see Cold storage, because they cannot earn streak freezes.
Public trading card (/u/[id])
Students and individual learners have a shareable trading card at /u/[id], where id is the account id, not the username. Tapping a row on any leaderboard opens it. Staff accounts have no trading card, so a teacher or HoD link returns Not found.
What appears on the card
The card is deliberately identity-level only. It is a collectable, not a report:
- Display name: the chosen username for individual accounts, and the student's real name for school accounts (which is why a school student's card is limited to their own school, see Privacy below)
- Character and avatar, plus a milestone frame once one is earned
- Rank label for the subject (Head Chef, Senior Historian and so on)
- The one event medal you have equipped, with the month it was earned
- Counts only: how many medals and how many achievements you hold
- Member since (month and year) and a print number derived from the account id
- Favourite topic, meaning the topic you have reviewed most cards in
- Flip the card over for the full medal wall and earned achievement badges with their tier medals
Withheld by design. The card never shows XP, the streak day count, cards mastered, progress percentages, class rank or league tier. Anything that lets one student measure themselves against another is left off on purpose. Ranked comparison belongs on the leaderboard, where it is framed around your own next step.
Privacy
The card is signed-in only. A visitor who is not logged in is sent to the sign-in page first and then back to the card. The page is also marked no-index, so it never appears in search results. For individual accounts the name shown is the username you chose, not your real name, and any signed-in user can open the card.
A school student's card shows their real name, so it is limited to their own school: it opens only for signed-in users at the same school (and Educator admins). Anyone else, including a signed-in pupil or individual learner from another school, gets a Not found page. School students are covered by their school's data processing agreement and never appear on the Global or League leaderboards.
Sharing
Use the Share button under the card, or copy the URL from the address bar. The link is permanent and does not expire, but whoever opens it needs an Educator account and has to be signed in. For a school student the link only works for people at the same school, so sharing it with friends at another school, or with family who have their own individual account, shows them Not found rather than the card.
Streak & streak freezes
Your daily streak is the number of consecutive days you have finished a practice session. It appears prominently at the top of your profile and on the dashboard.
How the streak works
- Finish any session on a given day and the streak increments by one: Standard, Speed Round, Marathon, Mark it, Drill weak cards, Topic drills and Study mode all count. Live sessions (teacher-hosted) do not.
- The streak advances once per calendar day (UTC); multiple sessions in one day only increment it once.
- Miss days without enough freezes in reserve to cover all of them and the streak is lost. Your next session starts a fresh streak at day 1, and the done screen says “New streak started today”.
- Days roll over at midnight UTC (1am during British Summer Time).
Earning a lost streak back
Losing a streak of three days or more opens a 48-hour earn-back window. Complete two sessions inside it and the old streak count is restored in full, exactly where it left off. Your dashboard shows a card with how many sessions are left and how many hours remain. If the window passes, the streak simply stays at the new count and carries on from there. See the Practice page for the full mechanic.
Streak freezes
A streak freeze is spent automatically for a day on which you finish no session, protecting your streak count. You never have to manually activate a freeze. The daily goal plays no part: any finished session keeps the streak going. Freezes are spent when you next finish a session, one per missed day. If you hold enough to cover every missed day, they are consumed and your streak survives. If you hold fewer than the days you missed, the streak starts again at day 1 and you keep the freezes you hold, so a partial reserve never covers part of a gap.
Earning streak freezes
- 7-day streak milestone
- +1 freeze every 7 consecutive days, capped at 5.
- Homework completion
- The first time you complete a homework assignment set by your teacher, you earn +1 streak freeze. Subsequent completions of the same assignment do not award another freeze.
- Who can earn them
- Freezes are capped at 5 on every account. There is no unlimited supply, so a streak can still be lost once you run out and miss enough days. Pro individuals, individuals on the 7-day trial, and school students can all earn freezes from the 7-day streak milestone. School students have a second path: the first completion of each homework assignment their teacher sets also earns one, since only school accounts have homework. Only free individual accounts whose trial has ended can no longer earn freezes.
School students: your class teacher can set homework that rewards a streak freeze on first completion. Ask your teacher to assign homework on topics you're revising. It's a free freeze for doing work you should be doing anyway.
