Getting started
Onboarding
Step-by-step setup for every type of Educator user: teachers setting up a class, school students joining their teacher, and independent learners starting on their own.

Teachers
Teachers create and manage classes, monitor class accuracy, run live sessions, and set homework. Everything is scoped to a subject. A teacher running both Food and History creates separate classes for each.
Step 1: Create your account
Go to educator-labs.com/sign-up and sign up with your email address, Google, or Microsoft. Select Teacher when asked who you are.
Step 2: Create your school or join an existing one
The form asks Is your school already on Educator? Nothing is pre-selected, so you have to answer it. There are three options.
- You have the invite code
- Select Yes - I have a school invite code. Paste the 6-character code a colleague shared and you join the existing school as a Teacher immediately. This is the quickest route, and the only one with no waiting.
- Your school is on Educator, but you have no code
- Select Yes - find my school in the directory. Type your school's name, pick it from the results, and send a request to join. Every Head of Department at that school is emailed. Until one of them approves you, your Class page shows a “Request sent” screen: you cannot create classes or see any student data in the meantime. You can withdraw the request from that screen and set up a different way instead.
- Nobody from your school has signed up
- Select No - I'll set it up. Enter your school name and an optional region. You become the school's Head of Department automatically, and you get a school invite code to share with colleagues.
Creating a school that already exists is blocked unless you confirm it. If the school name you type matches one already registered, Educator stops and names the existing school rather than creating a second one. A duplicate splits your classes, licences, and leaderboard across two schools, so the right move is almost always to get the invite code from a colleague or to use the directory search. If yours is genuinely a different school that happens to share the name, tick the override box and the create goes through.
Step 3: Create your first class
Still in the same onboarding flow, you set up your first class. You'll be asked for:
- Subject
- Food, History, Geography, Combined Science, Design & Technology, Religious Studies, Computer Science, Business, PE Theory, Drama, Sociology, and Psychology, along with their KS3 counterparts. Music is the one exception: it is not in the onboarding dropdown yet. Music teachers should pick any subject here to finish setting up, then create the Music class from Class → + Create another class, where Music and Music (KS3) both appear.
- Exam board
- Select the board your students sit (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, CCEA). Cards are filtered to content on that board's spec. KS3 classes have no board picker.
- Science route (GCSE Science only)
- Pick Combined (the default), a single separate science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), or Triple. One Science licence covers every route; it scopes the cards the class sees and composes with the exam board. Change it later in class settings.
- Class name
- Anything you like. Most teachers use something like “10A Food” or “Y11 History”.
- Year group
- Y7–Y11, used for scheme-of-work pacing calculations.
Tier (Foundation / Higher / Both) is not set during class creation. It defaults to Both and can be changed any time from class settings after the class is created.
Step 4: Share the class code with students
Once the class is created you'll see a class code (e.g. K7XM92). Students can either go to educator-labs.com/join and type the code in, or open a direct link of the form educator-labs.com/join/K7XM92, which carries the code for them. Creating your first class during onboarding takes you to the class page with a welcome panel showing the code; from there, the Launch screen link in the class header opens a projector-ready screen showing the code in large type plus a QR code that opens that direct link, so a class can join together in the room. Creating a further class via + Create another class drops you straight onto that launch screen instead.
Step 5: First session tips
- Once students have completed a few sessions, check Class accuracy by topic on your class page. Each topic shows a colour-coded accuracy bar (green ≥80%, amber, red <50%). Red topics are where students need more reinforcement.
- Run a live session for in-class use. Students join from their dashboard; you see a real-time leaderboard on the teacher screen. Great for starters or end-of-topic check-ins.
- Use Homework to assign a specific topic with a due date. First completion automatically grants the student a streak freeze.
- Click any student's name in the class roster to open their student detail page: mastery by topic, recent session history, and current streak.
Step 6: Adding colleagues
The school invite code is on the School page and is visible to Heads of Department. Send a colleague either the code itself or the invite link of the form educator-labs.com/join-school/RC5SV4, which fills the code in for them. Either way they join as a Teacher with no approval step. If a colleague signs up without the code and uses the directory search instead, their request lands on the School page for a Head of Department to approve or decline, and they are emailed the outcome.
Head of Department? The teacher who creates the school becomes its first Head of Department automatically. After that, promotion is self-service: an existing HoD can designate a colleague as HoD for their subject from the School page. HoDs can view all classes across the department, access school-wide analytics, archive inactive classes, approve or decline teacher join requests, and see the school invite code. Teachers can only see their own classes.
Students (school)
School students join Educator via a class code from their teacher. Their account is linked to the class and the subject their teacher has configured, with no choices to make about board or tier.
1Get your class code (or invite link)
Your teacher will give you a 6-character class code. It looks something like K7XM92. They may also share a direct invite link that pre-fills the code for you.
2Sign up and choose Student
If your teacher gave you a link rather than a code, open that instead. It first shows you the class and school name so you can check you have the right one (a code that doesn't match any class is caught here, with a box to try again), then takes you through sign-up and puts you in the class at the end, so you never type the code, and it skips a screen you'd otherwise see. Otherwise, go to educator-labs.com/sign-up directly - this route shows a one-off age-confirmation screen first, which the join link skips. Either way, you can sign up with Google, with Microsoft, or with an email address and a password. There is no magic-link sign-in; if you forget your password, use the Forgot password link on the sign-in screen. When asked who you are, select Student.
3Enter your name and date of birth
The onboarding form asks for your first name, last name, and date of birth. Your name appears on your trading card and the class leaderboard. Your date of birth is used as an age check. It is not shared with anyone.
Under 13? Joining with a class code works the same way at any age. Your school decides which pupils use Educator, and the code your teacher gave you is how we know you're one of them, so there's nothing extra for you to do. The date of birth is only an age check and isn't shared. Signing up on your own is different: without a school behind the account we need a parent or guardian to confirm it by email first. Teachers: you can still create accounts in bulk with Import students, which takes a spreadsheet of names and, optionally, emails - useful if you'd rather hand out sign-in details than circulate a code. Imported pupils skip these sign-up questions (no date of birth is asked for), and the import gives you a one-time credentials sheet of sign-in emails and temporary passwords to hand out.
4Enter your class code
When asked “Are you joining a class?” select Yes - I have a join code and paste in your code. If you arrived via your teacher's invite link, the code is already filled in, so just confirm it. This links your account to your class; the correct subject, board, and tier are set automatically.
Already signed up and need to join a class afterwards? Go to educator-labs.com/join, type the code, and you are added to the class and returned to your dashboard. The same page handles a direct /join/K7XM92 link, so scanning the QR code on your teacher's poster works whether or not you already have an account. If you signed up on your own first, joining turns your account into a school student account in that class: the page tells you what changes and asks you to confirm. Your teacher then sees your name and progress, you move from the Global and League leaderboards to your class and school ones, and the free-tier daily limit no longer applies. Your XP and streaks carry over. Pro subscribers need to cancel Pro first (see the FAQ).
5Start practising
You land on your dashboard. Hit Practice to start your first session. You can pick your avatar from your profile page whenever you like. Avatars are not part of the sign-up flow.
- Each correct answer earns 10 XP. XP unlocks avatars and advances your rank.
- Complete a session every day to build a streak. Completing homework earns a streak freeze, protection for a day you miss. You also earn a freeze at every 7-day streak milestone, up to 5 in reserve.
- Check the Learn page to read key facts for a topic before drilling, especially useful before a test.
Individual learners
No class code? No problem. Individual accounts give you access to the full Educator content library independently, ideal for self-studying students, home learners, or anyone who wants to practise outside of school.
1Sign up and choose Student
Go to educator-labs.com/sign-up and sign up. Select Student when asked who you are. You'll be asked for your first name, last name, and date of birth.
2Skip the class code and pick your subject
When asked “Are you joining a class?” select No - I'm studying on my own. You'll then choose which subject you want to start with, from any of the live subjects, including Sociology, Psychology, and Music (in Beta). You can curate the rest later: open My subjects on your profile (/me), pick a Key Stage, and tick exactly the subjects you want. Only those appear in your header subject switcher, alongside a “Manage subjects” link to change the selection.
3Your username
Onboarding no longer asks you to pick one. Educator generates a placeholder username for you so you can get straight to practising. Your username is how you appear on the global leaderboard and league standings, never your real name, so the first time you open the leaderboard you are offered a one-off prompt to change it to something you chose.
Exam board and tier
Neither is a question in the sign-up flow. An individual account is created against the Eduqas specification and both tiers (Foundation and Higher). For a subject that Eduqas offers, that is the specification your cards start out scoped to. For a subject it does not offer (Psychology, for example), no board filter is applied at all, so you see the whole bank. KS3 cards carry no exam board, so KS3 practice is never board-scoped.
You are not stuck with Eduqas. The board is set per subject and you change it yourself on your profile, under My subjects: every GCSE subject you have ticked carries an Exam board select, so you can sit AQA History and OCR Geography at the same time. It saves immediately and takes effect from your next session, and All boards removes the filter for that subject. Tier still is not self-serve: if you need only one tier, email support@educator-labs.com. School students are unaffected: their board is whatever their teacher set on the class.
GCSE Science has one extra control, not a replacement: alongside the usual Exam board select, your profile page also has a Science route picker: Combined, a single separate science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), or Triple. The route is a separate, orthogonal filter that composes with the board - both scope which Science cards you see, and either can be changed at any time.
Free vs Pro
- Free
- 7-day full-access trial, then 5 sessions/day. All subjects, all card types, spaced repetition, XP and streak. Global leaderboard visible.
- Pro: £50/yr or £6/mo
- Unlimited sessions, the global leaderboard with position-relative framing, and early access to new subjects. You also keep earning streak freezes after the trial ends (capped at 5, like every account), whereas free accounts can no longer earn them once the trial is over. Cosmetics are not a Pro feature: avatars, card skins, and characters unlock on XP for every account, paid or not.
4Upgrade to Pro (optional)
Click Go Pro from your dashboard or visit educator-labs.com/upgrade. Payment is via Stripe. You can cancel, switch billing intervals, or update your payment method at any time through the Customer Portal linked in your account settings.
Parent progress emails
Students can add a parent or guardian's email address from their profile page. The parent receives a double opt-in confirmation. No email is sent until they confirm. Once confirmed, they receive a weekly encouraging summary covering session count and current streak. The parent email can be removed at any time.
Leagues
Individual accounts (free and Pro) are part of the league system. Leagues have 25 standings from Iron IV to Champion, driven by your lifetime XP. Earn enough XP and you promote automatically at the end of a session. There's no relegation, so every tier you reach is yours to keep.
